Today is the last day of Fashion Mommy Favourites, and I want to share a passion of mine – photography. It all started when I was 14 years old and my father let me play around with his Canon 35mm SLR. I was hooked and started snapping up photos: landscapes, people, cityscapes… I loved the creativity and seeing the end result when the photos were printed. But it remained what it was – a hobby, while I finished off University, headed into the corporate world, started a family and moved to the ‘burbs.

A year after Timbit was born, I decided that sitting in a 6x6 foot cubicle and the technology industry was not my cup of tea. Instead, I made the decision to make my hobby more than just that, went back to school part-time, and gave birth to two more babies: Toddler Timbit and Life in the Moment Photography.

We all live extraordinary lives and yet, we’re so caught up in the rush of things, we don’t even realize it. A young couple holding hands as they walk down the street, a smile shared between two friends over coffee, the hug your son or daughter just gave you – these are all everyday moments. But I see something more and it’s my job to capture these experiences – to remind you that it’s the small intricacies of life that make it remarkable.

There’s that saying: “Pictures are worth a thousand words…”; but in my opinion, a thousand words doesn’t even begin to describe what a photo is all about. Photography is powerful and there is nothing humble about it. It speaks all languages and shows every raw emotion. I love having the ability to stretch myself creatively, and sharing in these unforgettable moments of joy, humour, curiosity, and intimacy. They happen in an instant, but they’re captured for a lifetime.

Someone once told me not to pursue hobbies as a profession, because it would eventually fall into the realm of a “job” as oppose to a source of enjoyment. But I am thankful to be able to say “I love my job” – and actually mean it.

This is why my passion is my business, and my business is my passion: Life in the Moment Photography.

True Colours

I love Old Meadowvale Village - it serves as a beautiful backddrop and is one of my favourite places to take photos during the fall. Back in October, I had the opportunity to stroll the streets of the Village while capturing some fun loving moments shared between this young and hip family. Their personalities are truly as colourful as the fall leaves I captured in the photographs: vibrant, bright, and full of spirit!

Giving Thanks!

Here's a sneak peek from a 90th birthday celebration that took place over Thanksgiving weekend! There was much to give thanks for: a milestone birthday, new additions to the family (babies and newlyweds!), and generations of family coming together. The backdrop was a family member's restored heritage home in Cambridge, Ontario that functioned as a post office during the early 1900s. I always love taking photos in the fall with the beautiful colours, and this made for the perfect setting!

Oh Baby! What a Surprise!

I met Baby Boy R, who surprised his mom and dad, Alison and Sean, by making his appearance four weeks early! Needless to say, mom and dad were in a scramble to prepare the house and the family dog, Max. Despite the new hectic schedule, this busy couple managed to squeeze a family photo shoot into their calendar this past Sunday morning - which goes to show how well Alison and Sean are adapting to parenthood!

One bottle, four outfit changes, and many shots later and Baby R was still sound asleep, giving us a stretch of his arms or a yawn every once in a while. The family pet, Max, was just as sweet - patiently watching me take photos, and giving the best puppy dog eyes when it was his turn. We also had to get shots of Baby R in his Toronto Maple Leafs outfit (Sean is an avid fan!), and his two matching "My Mommy Rocks" and "My Daddy Rocks" onesies.

Judging from the ease of Sunday morning's shoot, I would have to agree with Baby R- his mom and dad really do rock!

Happy New Year! As I look back at 2010, I reflect on the unforgettable moments that I've captured and will take with me throughout my life. These personal photos are but a glimpse into what the year has been like for me - a series of everyday encounters that make life extraordinary. There is beauty in simplicity: it's about you and me chatting over a cup of coffee; watching someone blow out candles on their birthday cake; tasting something for the first time; and seeing the "awesome-ness" in the buildings that surround us.

A Mommy Soiree - Oakville & Toronto

Back in October, I partied it up and partnered with my good friend - Mirjana Letterio, by throwing two hip and trendy fundraisers called A Mommy Soiree. Mir is a fabulous gal who's also a fabulous entrepreneur, and came up with the idea of a charity shopping event sans les enfants! What?! A shopping event geared towards moms without kids? I loved the idea and we started planning the events back in the summer. They took place in Oakville, at Dirty Martini Resto Lounge and in Toronto, at the Gladstone Hotel, with the purpose of raising funds for Sick Kids Foundation - a charity that is near and dear to us, as moms of young children.

Stylin' ladies from the 'burbs and the big city came out to shop our boutique style vendors, who offered exclusive discounts for the evening. A portion of the ticket sales and all funds raised from our silent auction benefited Sick Kids Foundation - and we raised over $2000. Not only did I pick up a few items from the fab vendors that were there, but I managed to snap a couple photos as well.

Saturday was a fantastic day - celebrated my youngest boy's 1st birthday with a lovely birthday brunch with the family and had an awesome time assisting photographer Anita Hadjur on an engagement shoot.

Anita is cousin to a friend of mine, and I LOVE her work. I went out on a mission: and that was to absorb and learn as much as I could from this amazingly talented woman. This was my first time assisting, and it was truly an extraordinary experience watching another photographer in action. Anita is absolutely brilliant and she gave me the opportunity to capture of few shots of my own. There is one fantastic one that I love, love, love...and I have Anita to thank for the amazing angle - she encouraged me to take one of my own after she finished the shoot. I have to say it is by far, one of my all-time favourites that I have ever taken!

My boys love Springridge Farm, and though we enjoy picking our own berries in the summer - fall is our favourite season to make a visit. You can never go wrong with their fabulous harvest festival - puppet show, boo barn, pumpkins and butter tarts (yummy treats available year-long) are what keep us going back every year.

A Gem in the City: Mark, Tina & Jonah

I have always loved this time of year. The autumn breeze and the gorgeous colours - firey red, blazing yellow, sweet citrus orange... Yesterday I had a photo shoot with Mark, Tina and Jonah, a family whose personalities are just as colourful as the leaves on the trees! We had an amazing walk through their neighbourhood - Olde Meadowvale Village, which is designated as a heritage conservation district by the City of Mississauga. I had forgotten how beautiful this area was - a true sparkling gem in the city.

After 13 years of marriage, Mark and Tina are shining gems themselves - stealing kisses, holding hands, and enjoying each others company. Their son Jonah is a reflection of them - a sweet boy full of character and life. We had some laughs and silliness: Tina lost her ring while throwing leaves - and thank goodness we found it; and I lost my blackberry while capturing them in action - and that was found as well! What luck!

It was a pleasure to capture this family on an easy-breezy Saturday afternoon!

So Thankful: Love & a Baby

Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian friends! This past Saturday, I had the chance to photograph Mandie, Mike and their little guy Baby E. It was a gorgeous day for a photo shoot, and though Baby E was a tired fellow - we still had a blast during our session. Mandie and Mike will be celebrating 8-years of marriage soon, and are so thankful to have Baby E in their lives who was born premature. Make no mistake, although a preemie, Baby E is strong and resilient - he came out a whopping 10 pounds!! Clearly, this strength is something he has picked up from his parents. And what's more, Mandie's dad came along and I witnessed the power of love between a proud grandfather and his grandson as he helped calm Baby E and lull him into a peaceful slumber.

I think we can all be thankful for the love that fills us and surrounds us - and, of course, thankful for Grandpas who know how to work their magic!

Miracle Baby: Dean, Kelly & Baby Z

Just this past beautiful Saturday morning, I had the chance to photograph Dean, Kelly and Baby Z. I arrived early to catch them during their morning routine as they finished off giving the little guy his bottle, and I watched as they enjoyed their time lounging in bed. Hearing how far they've had to come to finally start a family of their own truly makes Baby Z one gorgeous miracle baby, and the amount of joy that he brings into their lives is insurmountable.

This family is as laid-back and easy-going as it gets: sharing stories about their lives, enjoying the little intricasies that we take for granted, and literally just being in the moment. It was a pleasure to spend the morning with them!

Meeting Baby K

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of photographing Baby K who is one of the sweetest babies I've ever met. She was all about cuddling with her parents, Amy & Jaime, and did very little fussing! Taking photos with her was a breeze, and watching Mom & Dad dote on her reminded me of what it was like to be a first-time parent - always wondering if you're doing the right thing. These new parents have nothing to worry about and are doing a fantastic job. Amy & Jaime instinctively soothed Baby K by swaddling her up in a pink cotton blankie, and she fell asleep soundly in Dad's arms.

This past Sunday morning was absolutely gorgeous outside, and the perfect day for me to play co-hostess at my BFFs baby shower. Ms. K and her hubbie are expecting their first in August - and are completely estatic anticipating the arrival of their bouncing baby boy. It was a fabulous day with great friends, great food, and great fun! A huge thank you to Ms. T, who graciously opened her doors to the 20 lovely ladies in attendance...and took that fantastic photo of me with Mama Bear Ms. K!

Sneak Peek: I'm Tickled Fuchsia!

Have you ever dabbled in speed dating? I myself have not, but the concept intrigues me - 3 minutes to determine: 1) if a connection can be established; 2) if there are shared interests; and 3) whether "getting to know each other better" can be taken to the next level. Now put a spin on this concept by adding 25 savvy women, and what have you got? A fabulous "speed networking" event created by Tina Clark Yelle, founder of The Fuchsia Factory Inc., an Ottawa-based company.

When I heard The Fuchsia Factory Inc. was coming to Shopgirls Boutique in Toronto, I contacted Tina and Toronto's own Fuchsia Factory Girl, Jennifer Pitt, and offered to shoot the event. I wanted to get involved for two reasons - for one, I loved the idea of business-minded entrepreneurial women coming together to share ideas and best practices in support of one another. And second, it was a great opportunity to network and build a portfolio focusing on fellow women entrepreneurs!

While sipping on The Fuchsia Factory Inc. labelled water (love the branding!), I managed to put my mom-preneur multi-tasking skills to good use by shooting and networking at the same time. What an experience it was...meeting gals from diverse backgrounds and various industries: marketers, photographers, creative directors, and designers - each one bringing a unique colour palette to the table. I gave a 90-second elevator speech, listened to my partner's, exchanged business cards and then moved on to the next candidate. It amazed me that in the span of 3 minutes, I could really determine if there was a connection and any value in building a relationship. And even if there wasn't, well...no hard feelings, it was worth the chat because there is something to be said about word of mouth marketing.

Oh my! I love an afternoon delight! What more could a girl ask for than one filled with martinis, gourmet treats, and shopping luxe items by Toronto's uber chic female entrepreneurs? That's exactly what shopping socialites did this past Sunday at Shop Socials exclusive "The AFTERNOON Tea[SE]" event held at Flirty Girl Fitness (462 Wellington St.).

The studio space was turned into the hippest boutique in the city filled with fabulous goodies by local designers, and unique offerings represented by trend-setters and stylists. Toronto's fashionistas delved into this one-stop shopping event: sipping on tea infused martinis by DAVIDs TEA while perusing couture inspired jewelry by Stella & Dot, salivating over the luxury leathers of cha cha, trying on the glam designs of Karamea, and booking their private designer shopping parties with Ooh La La Consulting (see Shop Socials website for the full list of haute designers and service providers). There was something for every girl and enough to satiate any shopoholic's appetite!

I have to admit: I couldn't resist the tease, and in between taking a few shots, I gave in to temptation and made a few luxe purchases! Okay. Maybe not just a few...

This is Not Kitsch

What a whirlwind weekend of meeting up with fun and fabulous friends!

Some kids have discriminating taste, so we deicded to head out to the Art Gallery of Ontario to meet up with our pals Mark, Chelsea, and their tiny tots, Sam and Maggie. We soaked up some art, whilst the children were enthralled with the AGO's 1800 square foot play area called Off the Wall (open from 10am to 4pm on the weekends). I quickly snapped up a few shots of our budding artistes.

Another dear friend of mine that is definitely not about kitsch, is Oksana Ulisko of Tea Amo Cupcakes. She invited me over to her deliciously decorated digs for a not-so-granny-like afternoon tea. While we chatted about the beautiful finds in her condo down by the lake, I devoured all the yummy treats that she baked up...savoury quiche, mini chai latte cupcakes, sugar cookies decorated with to-die-for pink icing... Anyone looking for some delectable goodies for that special occasion, remember to call Oksana for her menu of gorgeously decorated cookies, cupcakes, and cakes.

This was one weekend not for the indiscriminate.

Two New Loves of My Life!

As if I didn't have my hands already full with a young fam (the littlest is just under 4 months now!!!) and my photography...

I had a fabulous Stella & Dot "Get Gorgeous" launch event last Friday night. The jewelry line is making headlines in every fashion mag out there, and is VERY up-and-coming on the Canadian fashion circuit. What a great way to try on some gorgeous couture-style baubles and test out my new 85mm F/1.8...who says you can't have more than one love in this life?

My New Love!

Finally! After weeks of waiting patiently, my new glass has arrived and I am absolutely in love with it! The Canon 85mm F/1.8 may very well be the replacement lens to the nifty-fifty that I've been toting around. Don't get me wrong - I still love my 50mm, but this 85mm is sharp, fast, produces very good image quality and is an overall great performing lens. And, despite not opening up as wide as the 85mm F/1.2 L II, the images have excellent (and beautiful!) bokeh (background blur). I did some test shots earlier tonight...

I have to admit...I never use to wear any costume jewelry. I was all about beautiful bling - diamonds, platinum, and gold - that is until my friend Mirjana Letterio introduced me to the Stella & Dot line. (Check the archives for some product shots that I took quickly the other night and just posted.) I recently attended one of her infamous Stella & Dot parties. Lo and behold...I fell in love with just about every piece there! I now have a new addiction to these beautiful baubles, and I'm on a mission to get all my friends looking gorgeous by wearing these pieces.

Making It Official!

I had a photo shoot this past Sunday with a fabulous family made up of an array of personalities! Grandparents, siblings, step-siblings, and colorful kids all coming together for a Sunday feast. I was there to take some fun portraits (which were anything but formal!), and capture candid moments while the family spent time chatting, watching the football game, and preparing a delicious meal. To get things going for the kids (and to give grandparents, mums and dads a little break) - we took them outside for some winter fun on the trampoline.

Better Late, Then Never!

Happy New Year!

Oh, what will 2010 have in store for me? Well...I'm starting off with a slew of projects: designing a logo for my company (Life in the Moment Photography), finalizing a website, and continuing to expand my portfolio (of course!), just to list a few. Plus, I am waiting patiently for my new lens to arrive...the 85mm F1.8!

Yes...after my 3 month love affair with the Nifty Fifty, I finally came to the decision to buy another prime lens. Although the Nifty Fifty project has ended - with tons of photos having been taken with it, I must say...I absolutely love this lens and it will not be put to rest. I am now so use to getting in tight with my subjects, maneuvering myself around to get the best angle, and have even gotten over the novelty of shooting at f1.8 to get that delicious blur (depth of field or DOF).

I can't wait to officially launch my website, and I can't wait to get my hands on that yummy new piece of glass! My patience is going to be tested - but it's better late, then never!

The Sweet Life

Life has changed quite a bit around the household with the new addition of Baby AJ. It's almost been a month and we are getting back into the swing of things. Although I haven't been as diligent as I would like to be with capturing photos of the boys, I do sneak in a photo opp or two when they are both in a cheery good mood. They are really sweet kids (I know I'm partial to them as their Mommy), but for the most part it has been easy to snap a few shots here and there (...and when I'm not totally exhausted from the late nights!).

Speaking of sweet - I'm working on a project for a friend of mine - Oksana Ulisko of Tea Amo. If you are in the T.O. and need custom order sweets for that special occasion, please give her a ring - her cupcakes and cakes are absolutely de-lish! Not only have I been able to sample some of her yummy work, but I have taken some commercial shots of her gorgeous creations, and am working on the photo set now. This is my first time working with food/still life and I am so happy to have had the opportunity to do so. It was a challenge having to work quickly, styling it, and taking macro shots - but I loved it!

I'd say life is pretty sweet for me!

FINALLY. The new addition to our family made his entrance into the world on Friday, October 23 at 12:17am. It is unbelievable how much AJ looks exactly like JC, who was born almost 4 years ago - both of them sporting a full head of jet black hair and staring up with bright alert eyes.

I'm already snap-happy, and looking forward to taking a million pictures of the fam. Cheers to sleepless nights, diaper changes, constant feedings, and beautiful photo opportunities!

Changing Seasons!

Here we are in mid-October and if you live anywhere close to Toronto, Ontario, you're probably thinking that we skipped the autumn season and that winter has made its appearance already. Brrrrr...I actually had to pull out JC's winter jacket for school this morning! Although the seasons are changing quickly and coming early (where did our summer go?), I wish I could say the same for Baby Number 2 - but he/she is quite a little tease and still has not made an appearance. Nonetheless we had a wonderful Thanksgiving this past weekend, celebrating with family and making the trek out to Chudleigh's - an apple farm located about 45 minutes north-west of the city.

During the farm visit (though quite entertaining and fun), I quickly came to realize that perhaps it is now time to use the camera for strictly familial functions for the time being. Call me crazy, but I was going to try and squeeze in one last photo session before baby. But, I have to finally admit...the belly is officially limiting my mobility - and the pregnancy waddle does not help either. What a difference a few days make!

I'll keep everyone posted as to when I start my portrait sessions again. Until then, enjoy the snapshots I managed to get of hubbie and JC this weekend.

Baby Time!

As every Yummy Mummy knows babies run on their own time. Despite this fact, I still find myself counting down the days/weeks to delivery (2 weeks and 4 days to go!!) and hoping that I'll see some action within the next week or so. Ahhh...but JC was a little late and so I will just have to settle with the idea that perhaps this one will be as well. While I wait and since timing is everything - it seemed like this week was the perfect time to visit with an old friend.

My son JC and I had the chance to catch up with new Yummy Mummy and a long time friend of the fam, Lisa and her 4-month old son Mason. Yes. 4-months old and just meeting him for the first time...better late, then never! Our visit was indeed timed perfectly and like old friends do, we picked up where we left off last. Lisa is in total comfort zone - totally taking Mommyhood in stride and enjoying her time with Mason. We had an awesome time - giving JC a taste of what it's like to play with 4-month old baby (in preparation of his own pending Big Brother status), and giving me an opportunity to take some photos of adorable Mason.

Not for Commitment Phobes: The Nifty-Fifty at Andrea & Steve's Wedding!

This past weekend, hubbie and I were honoured to attend the wedding celebration of our friend Andrea to her long-time boyfriend Steve. We had a great time sans JC, who was hanging out at Grandma and Grandpa C's house; and also despite me being three-and-a-half weeks away from delivering baby whilst sporting three-inch Elie Tahari heels (that's right...what girl doesn't love black patent peep-toes?). My other fashion accessory included my Canon XSi with the Nifty-Fifty; and, although I admittedly was suffering from exhaustion, I did manage to get in a few shots here and there. The difficult thing was using only the 50mm lens like I said I would until the end of the year (aka Project Nifty-Fifty). A zoom lens would have been fabulous to use for this wedding, but I do think some of the shots turned out nifty (har har!); and, like the bride and groom, I've made a commitment!

Project Nifty-Fifty!

My Aunt Georgine and Aunt Tammy (fraternal twins) recently celebrated their 50th birthdays this year! Congratulations!

I tell you...magic must run through the blood of my mom and her 7 siblings, because no one in that family looks a day over 35 - including these two aunts. Needless to say, their 50 years started me thinking: I'm getting ready for a new lens purchase and I've had my heart set on a fast telephoto lens (Canon's EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM). Pretty sweet and pricey...just don't tell hubbie! But with the recent birthday well wishes for my Aunties' big-five-Os - the prime time of their lives according to Oprah - I started to think sticking to a "prime lens" (fixed focal length) might not be such a bad idea.

With that in mind and my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II (cheap, yet sharp) in hand, I've set out on a mission to take shots with only the lightweight nifty-fifty. It was the first prime lens that I purchased and I use it often...just not often enough. I've become accustomed to shooting with my two zoom lenses, assuming that doing so provides more versatility - like not having to re-position myself shooting candids, and having the freedom to zoom in and out. But the reality is, shooting with a fixed focal length lens can be just as satisfying and can deliver beautiful shots. As well, I've been thinking that the Canon zoom lens I've had my eye on, although fast with a fixed aperture of f/2.8 and takes gorgeous pictures with excellent bokeh (aka background blur), is quite heavy and bulky for me to lug around. Especially considering what I will be using it for.

So where does that leave me? Well, since I've totally confused myself as to which lens to purchase, as I am now looking at the Canon EF 135mm f/2.0L USM (a prime lens fixed at 135mm), I've decided to make a project out of shooting with only my prime 50mm until the end of the year. I started on October 1st with my cousin Lisa's maternity shoot - and so far so good (ok, I cheated a bit and took shots of my son JC the day before). This lens produces great photos, good blur, and is fast in low light situations.

I just got back from a photo shoot with my cousin Lis, who is TWO WEEKS (!!) away from becoming an official member of the Yummy Mummy Club! A Fresh Perspective

Oh my! I have four weeks to go until I deliver baby number 2. The realization has hit me, and definitely puts things into perspective. It's been nice to have a consistent routine that's been working for us - on top of an already full household schedule. The only downfall to my new domestic life? Hubbie has been the victim of my numberous "break-through" try-it-on-the-fam-first recipes. So far, so good. Who doesn't love Giunness beef stew? (I ask him to critique my photos, not my cooking!) However, based on what I hear from those who parent 2 or more, I'm guessing this lovely rhythm we find ourselves grooving to will soon become a chaotic tempo with the arrival of number 2; and we'll be learning to dance to a whole new beat. But are things really going to be as 'end-of-the-world' as they make it sound; and will it be all dire straits for me? The thing about perspective is that it is subjective, and dependent on both context and experience. And so, I'm keeping in mind that depending on where I stand, my point of view and perception of reality will be different.

The same can be said about perspective in photography and the relationship between the camera and subject. By simply taking a familiar object or scene and shooting from a different angle, can give you a unique and interesting photo that would have otherwise been bland. This could be taking the shot from above, below, at the wide angle, or moving in tight with the subject to fill the frame. Instead of taking a photo straight on, consider how converging lines, patterns, lighting, and shadows play in the frame. It's amazing how a subject in a photo can change depending on the camera's position, aperture, and shutter speed. Changing the perspective can convey depth, length, size, colour, shapes, and texture - and you will find your photos going from blah to fresh. At first, it may feel awkward taking photos from different angles, as you try to see the end result of the camera's point of view, but you'll soon find that change is good.

Afterall, depending on where you stand things can look a whole lot better!

I'm No Paparazzi - But I Love Candid Photography!

Yes. I'll admit it. I read US Weekly. Not regularly I might add, but while at the dentist office I often pick up the magazine to peruse the latest photos of Hollywood's A-list actresses without make-up on (gasp!). Guilty pleasure? Absolutely! Who doesn't love incriminating photos of the rich and famous? (Mental note: make mention to hubbie that Jessica Alba is not THAT hot - its all that damn airbrushing.)

Now, I'm no paparazzi (for one, I don't stalk or harass people; and two, I've never been punched while photographing someone - nor do I plan to be); but I absolutely love capturing spontaneous moments. Rather than a studio set up with staged lighting and proper posing, I find photographing people in a natural setting make the shot more dynamic and meaningful. There's a sense of comfort that enables people to let their guard down even with a camera around. The best part is, since most of the time your subjects will be unware of you actually taking the shot - the end result is a complete surprise (Ohhhh my!). Instead of focusing on the techniques associated with classic photography, candids provide us with snapshots and snippets of life in action as it happens before us.

Did You Just Take a Picture of Moi?!?!

To clarify, I'm not talking about taking voyeuristic shots (ie. taking photos without permission); but rather a style of photography that gives photos a more "in the moment" feeling. I take my camera everywhere with me...well most of the time, at least when Yummy Mummy and pregnancy brain haven't caused me to forget my camera bag that sits at the front door. (Yes...I still manage to leave without it sometimes despite the strategic location.) What I've learned is that there are going to be everyday moments that you don't want to miss, so don't leave it to chance - always have your camera ready.

Another tip is to take shots as frequently as possible. Just keep snapping away in continuous burst mode, because you'll never know what's going to happen next. Like when the candles are being blown out on a birthday cake, or during a wedding ceremony and capturing the couple's first kiss. Multiple shots increase your chances of getting that great photo that's full of surprise. As well, I prefer to shoot in natural light and keep the flash off (no one likes to be blinded by multiple bulb flashes) - otherwise you may end up with the famous closed eye shots.

Capturing that Beautiful Baby Bump!

Morning sickness is a perfect example of a misnomer. Whoever came up with the concept must have never experienced it - because it can occur morning, noon and night, making for good times all day long for the first 3 months of pregnancy or longer. To top it off, amongst a million other symptoms, there's the: raging hormones (Who cries during an epsidode of MTV's 'The Hills'?); lack of energy (Sorry honey, I need my sleep for next 40 weeks!), and all that pain to look forward to during delivery (Epidural, please and thank you!). Yet despite all of this, I love being pregnant - and I know a ton of other women who feel the same!

When it comes to maternity photography, there's something to be said about the beauty and intimacy that can be captured in a single frame featuring a growing baby bump and the miracle that transpires. Yummy Mummies-to-be generally head out to a studio setting, with lighting, and backdrops, and get some shots of heart-shaped hands around that cute belly button. All of which is fine and dandy. In my case, I'm trying to avoid the typical maternity session to capture some really great initimate and fun frames of Mum and her baby bump.

This is a sample selection for Katie's Baby Bump & Family photo set. We did her shoot in-home, without the use of flash or studio/strobe lighting. All I had was my Canon DSLR, lenses, tungsten lighting (regular bulb lighting), and in some cases no artificial lighting at all - just natural sunlight. Congratulations Katie and family!

Defining Texture

Yummy Mummy or not, as every woman knows: A girl's gotta make do with her hair texture and define the cut the salon stylist gave her with a little volumizing mousse, anti-frizz control, or defining pomade. We use these styling products to give us the texture we're looking for, whether it's to smooth away those fly-aways during the winter season (hate, hate, hate static electricity!) or to boost those curls and give them more bounce. We understand texture as a way of creating desirable structure to our hair; and can further identify these "fibers" with other characteristics such as soft, thick, smooth, rough, etc.

So what the heck does texture and styling products have to do with photography?

This photo was taken at Casa Loma leading up to one of the towers. I love the colour/tone contrast, the linearity of the brick work, and the texture of the stones, cement, and wood pillar. You can see that some of the bricks have smooth surfaces, whereas others are rough and have been chipped away.

Well, on any ordinary day you can pick up a camera, have a focus point, click the shutter, and (voila!) you have yourself a snapshot of an image. But, let's take it to the next level to get that truly fabulous shot by way of photo composition or, in other words, thoughtfully organizing visual elements to capture the emotional or aesthetic qualities of your subject. The combination and arrangement of a multitude of these elements contribute to good composition, and ultimately lends itself to a compelling photograph. Among the long list of visual elements (lines, tone, shape, form, etc.), texture is a favourite that I like to utilize and capture. In photographs, texture adds dimension and can be areas of small patterns, shapes, tone or lines; or it can be the surface or characteristic of an object. It's all around us from the smoothness of satin bed sheets (oooh la la!) to the grass at the soccer field where my son plays (go Timbits Soccer!).

Light and shadow define the blades of grass on the soccer field.

When I took my son for a bike ride around the neighbourhood today, I was able to capture some examples of texture (see below). As well, don't be afraid to get up close to the object or subject your photographing. Your perspective through the camera lens of the lighting, shadows, tones, and lines, etc., will contribute to defining textures and patterns of objects in your shot. So, whether your the photographer or you're being photographed, keep in mind the composition of visual elements - and be sure to make your hair look fabulously textured.

The contrast of the black tire against the bright yellow wheel, gives prominence to its pattern and texture. I love the shadow on the pavement that reflects the shape of the wheel and parts of the bike that weren't photographed.

The Sky's the Limit!

Ever wonder how they get that beautiful, deep blue sky in photos - making the landscape look surreal? Assuming that your camera is metering correctly, you might still find that blue skies in your photos appear dull or have turned white, even with all other objects in the foreground properly exposed. You may be able to account for this by adjusting your aperture or shutter speed by a stop or two to underexpose the shot. But, if your preference is to adjust your photos optically, then get yourself some high quality colour contrast or polarizing lens filters; or, invest in a good photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, and you'll be able to put that rich blue back into your skies.

Holy filters Batman! Help me choose one!

Photographic filters for your lenses will remove specific colours of light - the result being that the colour will receive less exposure and in turn will be reproduced darker in the actual image. Colour contrast filters are not used to lighten areas - their use is to darken the colours opposite on the colour wheel (ie. Green filters will darken reds; and red-orange filters will darken blues). Yellow, orange, and red colour contrast filters are often used to darken blue skies - while leaving the white clouds untouched. Keep in mind that lens filters will affect other areas in the photo, so any subject matter in the landscape will also increase in contrast if they contain colours near the complement of the filter. Alternatively, polarizing filters are often used to darken the sky, eliminate some reflections, and reduce glare.

While photographers generally use photo editing software to do minor touch ups to final photos, I don't object to using them for digital enhancements. Photo editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop, make it easy to take those white skies and make them blue. You can use the 'Magic Wand Tool' in Photoshop to select the sky area and select the shade of blue best suited for your sky. You can also add a layer to your image by utilizing the 'Gradient Tool'.

This photo of Old Montreal's cobblestone streets was taken with a point and shoot camera (Nikon's Coolpix S210). It was an overcast day with absolutely no sun or blue sky in sight - just gray clouds. In order to get that sky blue, I made adjustments to tone curve, contrast, hue and colour saturation.

In some of photos used for today's blog, I've compensated for exposure by stopping down one or two stops. As well, I'm a fan of Canon's Digital Photo Professional and use it to make adjustments to brightness, contrast, tone, hue, and colour saturation. Although shooting in RAW format when using a DSLR provides you with more flexibility and control on how your image looks; regardless of whether I'm shooting in RAW, JPEG, or both, I've been happy with the results I achieve when using my editing software. It takes a little time and practice in making image adjustments, but it is definitely worth it if those white skies are making you blue.

After becoming a mom, multi-tasking became THE skill to perfect. Now that you've got all that shopping out of your system, how do you take that scrumptious photo of your little one you ask? Taking snapshots is one thing, so go ahead and click away. But if you're looking for that one iconic picture to frame, it will take a little more time, patience, and don't forget that nice long nap before the shoot...for baby and toddler that is!

I did a photo shoot last fall with two adorable brothers! My definite must haves for baby and toddler sessions: some extra time (in case of meltdowns!), something to entertain baby (ie. shakey toy, noise maker, ANYTHING to occupy baby's attention or for baby to hold); and, a solid knowledge-base of the top 5 most popular shows on Treehouse to chat with the pre-schooler! Oh...and don't forget to bring snacks; and, if you plan on being outdoors, proper clothing!

As with any photo shoot, it always helps if parents can come prepared with a list of ideas on specific shots they are looking for. Even with my own toddler, unless I'm clicking away candid shots, I have an idea of what I want to capture. This helps with timing and allows for the shoot to run a little more smoothly - little ones don't have the patience to sit in front of a camera all day. You want to make sure you keep things moving along with little lag time in between, so you can get all the photos you are looking for.

Most importantly, enjoy the time you're spending with your kids in front of the camera. There's nothing more fun then creating memories...although shopping does come a close second for this shopaholic mummy!

Blogging at last!

Finally! I'm blogging. Mostly because I have found the time to do so...thanks to Ontario Maternity and Parental Leave benefits; but mainly because I have this incessant need to let out my creative side. It's been a while since I last picked up the camera, and it has been even longer since I last wrote a truly memorable and crafty piece of text.

I am hoping to thrive in both these areas, because...well...I need to keep you enthralled and coming back for more; and, to save me from the insanity that becomes of a stay-at-home yummy mummy with a beloved toddler and baby-to-be (expected arrival: October 27). Rest assured, while I'm at it (and true to form) I'll throw in a little bit of my wit and sarcasm to keep you entertained. Selfish survival reasons aside, however, the intent of this blog is three-fold:

First and foremost, this will be the forum in which I will share my all-time favourite photos that I have taken. For me, these are the shots that have captured a truly extraordinary moment in time. Whether it be an instant of passion, curiosity, happiness, humour, or intimacy, every frame tells a story or provides a glimpse into our life experiences. I invite you to share your thoughts and comments on any of the photos you see in this blog.

Secondly, for a few minutes of reading pleasure, I promise to whisk you away from the everyday mundane. Okay...not whisk, but you get the point. Why not read about the trials and tribulations I go through, as I try my darndest to get the shot I want/need/love? I'll provide you with my perspective and first person account of taking photos, while providing photography tips along the way - tips that I've picked up from photography classes, other photographers, my favourite websites, or from my general experiences, etc.

Thirdly, I'm an honest person and I can't deny this: I'm using this blog as a "plug".
